A couple of weeks ago, Varsity Choir attended the Los Angeles A Cappella Festival. The festival included weekend-long classes and workshops with top performers and arrangers in the business, the opportunity to perform and hear other high school and college groups from around the country, a personal masterclass led by Stanford University a cappella leaders, and a professional showcase starring the HouseJacks and guest stars from the Pentatonix. The A Cappella Video Award was even held that night at the showcase! It was an inspiring weekend that opened the students’ eyes to the possibilities of a cappella music.
After the festival Sunday, we had an exchange with the 2018 ICCA champions, the SoCal Vocals from USC. It turns out we are the first high school they have ever had an exchange with! We observed some of their rehearsal, they performed some songs they are preparing for ICCAs this year, we performed for them, and then we had a Q&A. To say that the students had an amazing time would be an understatement. Having the opportunity to work in such an intimate setting with this caliber of talent was an unforgettable experience.
